Spartans Jump To 19th After Two Rounds Of NCAA Championship

Fayetteville, Ark.—After inclement weather forced the Spartans to play the second round on Sunday, the San José State women's golf team improved the team score by 22 shots and jumped up three places at the 2019 NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championship at the Blessings Golf Course.

After the Spartans spent Saturday going to the golf course, getting ready for the second round and having play delayed until Sunday, SJSU responded with a 10-over 302 in the second round and moved into 19th place at 42-over 626. The team made 12 birdies during the round after making just seven in the first round on the par 73, 6,397-yard course.

Natasha Andrea Oon had a solid putting day as she shot a two-under 71 and is tied for 19th at four-over 150.  She started the day with a bogey but responded with a birdie on the par-five, 527-yard second hole. Oon then made par on six of the next seven holes with a birdie on the par-five, 470-yard seventh hole.

Oon made her third of four birdies on the day on the par-five, 525-yard 10th hole. She stayed at two-under par before a bogey on #14, but made that up with a birdie on #15. Oon then made three consecutive pars to end her round.

Abegail Arevalo had another solid round for the Spartans, shooting a three-over 75 and is tied for 57th at nine-over 155. She had a par start to her round as she was even par through nine holes with nine consecutive pars.  Arevalo made a save on the par-4, 264-yard ninth hole, after she chunked her second shot in the sand and made a putt to save par for a four. The final nine holes were not as nice to Arevalo as she shot three over for those holes with four pars, four bogeys and a birdie on the par-five, 477-yard 15th hole.

Franziska Friedrich shot a five-over 78 Sunday and is tied for 90th at 13-over 159. She made two birdies during her round, both on par-four holes, #6 and #11, and finished her round with back-to-back pars.

Antonia Malate shot a four-over 77 and is tied for 105 at 16-over 162. While she did not make a birdie during her round, she did make 15 pars, including a string of seven consecutive from holes 9-15. She made a par on the par-four, 390-yard 12th hole, one of only 53 players (including Oon) to make a par in the second round on the hardest hole on the course.

Alexandra Cooper made a team-best five birdies during the round, but four double bogeys, including back-to-back on her final two holes, found her at 80 for the round. She is tied for 130th at 25-over 171. Cooper was one-over par through nine holes, making birdies on the par-four #4, #6 and #9. She actually back three consecutive birdies on #9, #10 and #11 On the 18th, she had a nice drive but her second shot flew over the green, bounced onto the cart path and got a lucky roll back onto the playable surface but it took four more shots to find the hole.

Player scores were down 3.70 strokes from round one to round two. The average first-round score was 79.93, while players averaged 76.23 strokes in the second round.

Duke shot an 11-under 218 and moved into first place at two-over 586. Southern California is now second at 11-over 596. Individually, Sierra Brooks of Florida shot a six-under 67 in the second round and has a one-shot lead at four-under 142. The national individual champion will be decided after the third round on Monday.
