Oon Named WGCA Second Team All-America Honoree

San Jose, Calif.—The honors continue to pile up for San José State freshman Natasha Andrea Oon as she was named a second team Women's Golf Coaches' Association  (WGCA) All-America honoree on Thursday.

Oon is the 20th Spartan women's golfer to receive All-American honors. In all, San José State women's golfers have received 38 All-American honors. The last SJSU freshman to earn All-America recognition was SJSU Sports Hall of Famer Janice Moodie in 1994.

Oon had a tremendous freshman year for San José State as she finished the season with nine top-10 finishes including ninth place at the NCAA Championship earlier this week where she shot a three-over 222. She was named the Mountain West Freshman of the Year and a first team All-MW selection. Oon led the team in stroke average at 72.18, the third-best average in school history behind All-American My Leander (71.27) and Erica Moston (72.07).

For the season, Oon recorded 13 rounds under par and seven rounds of par. She led the team at the NCAA Cle Elum Regional with a four-under 211 to tie for ninth place. Oon tied for second at the MW Championship at three-over 219.

She started her freshman year with a victory at the Minnesota Invitational with a nine-under 207, and shot 67-70 in the first two rounds, which happened to be her 17th birthday. Oon tied teammate Abegail Arevalo for The Gold Rush individual title at two-under 214.

"I think it is kind of cool to be an All-American my freshman year," said Oon. "This was something I wanted to achieve in my four years here at San José State. I just didn't think it would happen this year."

"Natasha was an immediate impact player, who along with Abby (Arevalo), elevated the level of play on the entire team this year," said Spartan head coach Dana Dormann."Natasha is a special player for our program and the country of Malaysia. She represents her country in international competitions including the Asian Games and Asian Pacific Amateur, all while balancing her academics and Spartan golf competitive schedule.

"Pat (Hurst) and I enjoyed passing along lessons we have learned in our competitive days to Natasha and look forward to seeing her continued growth in her years to come at San José State."
