An athletics department record 86 student-athletes and four cheer squad members will be recognized either as a President's Scholar or Dean's Scholar at San José State University's 57th annual Honors Convocation.
This year's Honors Convocation recognizing the academic excellence of more than 6,700 students is Friday, May 3, in The Event Center.
To earn a President's Scholar designation, a student must earn a 4.00 grade-point average in one of the two semesters (Fall, 2018, & Spring, 2018) before the Honors Convocation. A Dean's Scholar is a San José State student with a 3.65 or higher grade-point average in a semester during the same academic calendar.
At this year's Honors Convocation, the President's Scholars will be honored individually. A record number 20 student-athletes from 12 intercollegiate athletics programs is designated as a President's Scholar. In recent Honors Convocations, the range of student-athletes named President's Scholars has been between five and seven.
"We are very proud of the student-athletes that achieved President's Scholar or Dean's Scholar status this year. Their dedication to academic achievement while in competing in Division I intercollegiate athletics is remarkable," says Eileen Daley, senior associate athletics director for academics and student services.
Gymnast Stephanie Relova and swimmer Jacqueline Nisson are President's Scholars for the second time.
"Congratulations to our student-athletes being recognized at this year's Honors Convocation. To have nearly a 30 percent increase in the number of student-athletes earning one of these university honors in a year is remarkable," said San José State Athletics Director Marie Tuite, who also praised the department's Academic Support staff for their daily service to these award recipients and the entire student-athlete population. "Academics is one of the core values of our department and these young men and women personify the student-athlete ideal."
All 22 San José State University NCAA Division I athletics programs had at least one current or former team member named as a President's Scholar or Dean's Scholar. For the third consecutive year, the women's swimming and diving program led the way with 13, four of which are President's Scholars. Football is next with 11, including two President's Scholars, and had the biggest numerical increase (+8) year over year. Third was women's water polo that matched women's swimming and diving's four President's Scholars and had nine honorees total.
