Cle Elum, Wash.—The San José State women's golf team shot a one-over 289 and are in fifth place after the first round of the NCAA Cle Elum Regional being played at the Tumble Creek Club at the Suncadia Resort.
The 289 is the seventh-lowest team score San José State has shot in the 24 regional appearances made. After making only four birdies on the front nine as a team, San José State responded on the back nine by making nine birdies and shooting two-under par as a team.
Natasha Andrea Oon shot the low round of the day for SJSU with a two-under 70 and is tied for eighth place. She started with a bogey on the first hole but then made 10 consecutive pars before a bogey on #12 and a par on #13. Oon then found the birdie streak as she finished the round making them on four of her final five holes (14, 15, 16 and 18).
Oon is the fifth player in school history to shoot a 70 in regional competition. Six Spartans have shot a 69, Rebecka Heinmert shot a 68 at the 2000 West Regional and Madeleine Ziegert shot a 67 in the first round of the 2010 West Regional at Stanford.
Abegail Arevalo started her final regional with an even-par 70 and is tied for 21st. She had a rough start to her day, making three bogeys, a birdie on two pars over her first six holes. Arevalo then strung together four pars, two birdies and three more pars to be at even par through 15 holes. She birdied the par-four #16, but had a bogey on #17 and made par on #18 to finish at even par.
Antonia Malate had another solid round for San José State, shooting a one-over 73 and is tied for 26th place. She started her round with seven consecutive pars, a birdie on the par-5 #8, then four more pars. Malate recorded back-to-back bogeys on #13 and #14, but ended her round with two pars-birdie-and bogey.
Alexandra Cooper returned to the lineup with a two-over 74 and is tied for 38th place. She made two birdies, three bogeys and four pars over her first nine holes, but finished the round with eight pars and a bogey on #11.
Franziska Friedrich rounded out the Spartan scoring with a four-over 76 and is tied for 57th. She was four-over par after nine holes, but made five consecutive pars to start the back nine. Friedrich finished the round bogey-par-birdie-par.
"We are very happy to be in Cle Elum, especially with the beautiful weather here," said Spartan head coach Dana Dormann. "The front nine here is much harder than the back nine, where it is pretty scoreable. We started slow but our patience with putting paid off as they started falling for us later in the round."
Southern California leads the team standings with a seven-under 281, followed by Northwestern at four-under 284, Washington at three-under 285 and Arkansas at one-under 287. The top-six teams after the final round on Wednesday will advance to the 2019 NCAA Championship at The Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Ark.
Individually, Ana Laura Collado of UCF shot a six-under 66 and has a one shot lead over Kathleen Scavo of Oregon who shot a five-under 67. In all, 20 player shot under-par in the first round (including Oon) and five other shot and even-par 72 (including Arevalo).
Second round action begins at 8:30 a.m. PT. The Spartans will start their second round off of the first tee at 9:30 a.m. PT with Arkansas and UCF.
