Cle Elum, Wash.—The San José State women's golf team shot a five-over 293 in the second round of the NCAA Cle Elum Regional and moved into third place at six-over 582 on Tuesday at the Tumble Creek Club at Suncadia Resort.
Southern California continues to lead the team standings at 10-under 566, followed by host Washington at two-over 578. Then the Spartans are third at six-over 582 followed by Arkansas at seven-over 583, Northwestern at 10-over 586 and Ohio State and UCF tied for sixth at 12-over 588. The top-six teams after the final round on Wednesday will advance to the 2019 NCAA Championship at The Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Ark.
Natasha Andrea Oon led the team again with a one-under 71 and is tied for sixth place at three-under 141. She made four birdies on Tuesday, starting and ending her round with birdies. Oon was even par after nine holes, making two birdies, two bogeys and five pars. She started her final nine holes with four pars before finishing bogey-birdie-par-par-birdie.
Abegail Arevalo shot two-over 74 on Tuesday and is tied for 17th at two-over 146. She also started and ended her round with a birdie but found a few bogeys during her round. Arevalo made six birdies and five pars but also had six bogeys and a double bogey.
Franziska Friedrich had her best round since mid-March with a one-over 73 and is tied for 34th at five-over 149. She shot a one-under 35 over her first nine holes, making birdies on #3, #6 and #8 and stayed at one-under par until #13 where a double bogey found her at +1. Friedrich responded on the par-5 #14 with a birdie to get back to even par and ended her round par-bogey-par-par.
Alexandra Cooper also showed fight over her final nine holes as she finished the day at three-over 75 is tied with Friedrich and four others for 34th at five-over 149. After shooting three-over for her first nine holes, Cooper responded on the back nine by shooting even par with two birdies, two bogeys and five pars.
Antonia Malate rounded out the Spartan scoring with a six-over 78 and is tied for 49th at seven-over 151. She made two birdies and 10 pars during her round.
The Spartans, who tied with Washington for the second-best team score of the day, made 19 birdies in the second round, trailing only Southern California who made 20 during the round. SJSU has made the third-most birdies for the tournament with 32. Arevalo is one of seven players who have made 10 birdies over the two rounds.
Third round action begins Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. The Spartans start the final round beginning at 10:20 a.m. with Southern California and Washington.
