Spartans Earn National Team & Individual Academic Water Polo Honors

Bridgeport, Pa.----- The San Jose State University women's water polo team concluded its 2019 season with 11 individual and team national academic honors according to the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC).

As a team, the Spartans were credited with a 3.21 team grade-point average (G.P.A.) for the 2018-19 academic year.

To qualify for the national academic honors, a team GPA of 3.00 was required while Individual student-athletes with a GPA of 3.20 or higher were honored. Fifty-seven teams were recognized.

"I would like to congratulate all of our award winners. It is a great accomplishment to receive these academic honors," said San Jose State women's water polo head coach Gabor Sarusi, whose team had at least 10 individual award winners for the third consecutive season.

"As coaches, we always tell our student-athletes that school is most important. For our team, the number of individual award winners (11 out of 20 eligible players from the 2019 team) and the team's overall GPA really speak volumes about how seriously our ladies take their academic studies. Also, a big 'thank you' to our academic support staff that helped these women along the way."

Michelle Taikeff, the only senior from the 2019 team, was honored by the ACWPC for the third time. Junior Sierra Painter and sophomores Riley Agerbeek, Isabella Schmidt, and Tyanna Supreme picked up their second ACWPC academic award.

Sophomore Lili Urvari and freshmen Olga Descalzi Portell, Hannah Henry, Matilda Moore, Sophie Spivack and Clarissa Wandinger were named to the ACWPC list for the first time.

In the last three years, San Jose State was honored each season for its team GPA and the Spartans notched 35 individual ACWPC academic awards.
