This Week in Spartan Athletics (Aug. 26-Sept. 1)

This Week in San José State Athletics returns this week to catch you up on last week's action and see what's ahead for the Spartans!

Free Admission to Gilroy Residents
As part of a campus-wide effort in response to the tragic shooting at the Gilroy Garlic Festival, the San José State University athletics department is teaming up to support the city of Gilroy, 16 miles south of San José and at the southern end of Santa Clara County.

SJSU Athletics is offering up to four free tickets to all Gilroy residents for any Spartan athletics event in the month of August, including the following games:
August 27 - Men's Soccer vs. Holy Cross, 7 p.m
August 29 - Football vs. Northern Colorado, 7 p.m.
August 30 - Men's Soccer vs. Sacramento State, 7 p.m.

In addition, all proceeds from Spartans Eats concession sales of garlic fries at the football team's season opener against Northern Colorado will be donated to the Gilroy relief efforts.

This Week: The Spartans kick off the 2019 season Thursday night with a non-conference game against Northern Colorado at CEFCU Stadium at 7 p.m. This is the first-ever meeting between the two teams.

Spartan Fact: Senior Josh Love is in line to be the first San Jose State player to start a season at quarterback in three consecutive seasons since Adam Tafralis in 2005 through 2007. In all, five Spartans (Tafralis, Steve Clarkson in 1980 through 1982, Ed Luther in 1977 through 1979, and Craig Kimball in 1972 through 1974) have started three consecutive seasons at quarterback since 1938.

Women's Soccer (0-0-2)
This Week: The Spartans play two more road matches this week beginning Thursday with a match at Loyola Marymount. SJSU then returns to the Bay Area to play at #3 Stanford on Sunday evening.

Last Week: The Spartans opened the season with two shutouts against Cal Poly, 0-0, last Thursday at home and at UC Santa Barbara, 0-0, on Sunday.

Spartan Fact: Goalkeeper Ariana Romero has recorded eight saves and two shutouts in her first two starts in a Spartan uniform. She had five saves against UCSB.

This Week: The Spartans begin the 2019 season at the Aggie Invitational hosted by UC Davis on Friday and Saturday. The team plays Pacific and UC Davis on Friday and Montana on Saturday.

Spartan Fact: Head coach Jolene Shepardson begins her sixth season at the helm of the program. She has led the Spartans to back-to-back winning seasons in 2017 (17-12) and 2018 (16-11).

Spartan Fact: Head coach Simon Tobin returns for his sixth season at San José State and his 33rd year overall. He begins the 2019 campaign with 338 victories, ranking 10th among active Division I men's soccer coaches.
