Woodbury, Minn.—Another birthday, another top-five finish for Spartan women's golfer Natasha Andrea Oon as she finished second with an eight-under 136 at the Minnesota Invitational and helped the San José State women's golf team tie for third place on Tuesday.
On her 17th birthday last year at the Prestwick Golf Club, Oon shot what would be her best collegiate round of her freshman year. On her 18th birthday, she matched that number with a five-under 67 in the second round. Oon had a clean card with five birdies and 13 pars on the round. She had an opportunity on the 18th to make birdie but just missed.
"I am really proud of Natasha and the way she played the last two days," said Spartan head coach Dana Dormann. "She made a lot of birdies. She found her stroke yesterday during the second round, and the delay really did not come at the right time for her. Natasha really stepped up today during her round."
The Spartans were very consistent in scoring, shooting a 291 in each of the two rounds. The tournament was condensed to two rounds after rain on Monday led to three delays.
Freshman Kajsa Arwefjäll finished tied for 35th at three-over 147 after shooting a 75 in the second round. She had two birdies and 12 pars during the round that included her making seven consecutive birdies (holes 8-14).
Antonia Malate tied for 35th at five-over 149, while Ysabel Tran shot a 74 in the second round to finish tied for 46th at seven-over 151. Maddie White tied for 59th at nine-over 153.
"We had some bright spots this tournament – Natasha, Kajsa making her debut as a Spartan," said Dormann. "We will keep learning and moving up the leaderboard."
San José State's next tournament is not until October when the team plays at the Illini Women's Invitational at Medinah Country Club in Illinois on the 7th and 8th.
