This Week in San José State Athletics returns this week to catch you up on last week's action and see what's ahead for the Spartans!

Football (2-2, 0-1)
This Week: The Spartans return to CEFCU Stadium for Friday Night Lights this week against New Mexico in a Mountain West matchup. The Lobos enter the game with a 2-2 overall record and are playing their first MW game of the year.

Last Week: The Spartans started MW play at Air Force last Friday night with a 41-24 loss. Josh Love completed 19-of-35 passes for 198 yards, while Nick Nash was 5-of-7 for 82 yards and two touchdowns in the air.

Spartan Fact: For the first time since 1950, San Jose State is playing football games on consecutive Fridays. This week's game vs. New Mexico follows the Friday, September 27 conference contest at Air Force. In 1950, San Jose State hosted Loyola (Calif.), now LMU, on Friday, October 13, losing 14-7, and traveled to the University of San Francisco on Friday, October 20, suffering a 27-0 shutout loss. After losing to USF, the Spartans, coached by first-year head coach Bob Bronzan, went 4-0-1 to finish the season with a 6-3-1 win-loss record, the program's fifth consecutive winning season in the post World War II period.

Volleyball (5-8, 0-2)
This Week: The Spartans go back on the road for two Mountain West matches at Utah State on Thursday and at Boise State on Saturday.

Last Week: The team opened the MW portion of the schedule with two matches. The team went down 0-2 and rallied to tie the match at 2-2 before San Diego State won the fifth set 16-14. The Spartans then came home to face Fresno State on Saturday and fell 3-0.

Spartan Fact: Freshman Drae Fresenius recorded her first two collegiate double-doubles last week. At San Diego State, she had 17 assists and 15 digs. Against Fresno State, Fresenius recorded 12 assists and 17 digs.

Women's Soccer (3-5-2, 1-1-0)
This Week: The Spartans play two home Mountain West matches this week - Thursday against Boise State and Sunday versus Utah State. Boise State will host this year's MW Tournament, November 5-9.

Last Week: The Spartans split a pair of MW matches, falling 1-0 at Colorado College before rebounding with a 2-1 win at Air Force. Sabrina Weinman and Carlie James scored the goals against the Falcons.

Spartan Facts: Carlie James scored her second career Spartan goal against Air Force, her first since her freshman season in 2016. Maddie Toomer assisted on both goals in the win over the Falcons.

Men's & Women's Cross County
This Week: The Spartans begin preparations for the Santa Clara Invitational on Saturday, October 19.

Men Last Week: Two Spartans finished in the top-15 at the Capital Cross Challenge. Luis Chavez was fifth with a personal-best 24:15.2, while Jose Piña finished 12th at 24:25.4. The Spartans finished 14th in the team standings.

Women Last Week: Jennifer Sandoval finished second at the Capital Cross Challenge with a time of 20:33.3, just 3.3 seconds behind the winner. Savanna Perez was seventh with a personal best of 20:49.9, as the Spartans finished fourth in the team standings.

Men's Soccer (1-7, 1-0)
This Week: The Spartans stay at home this week for a pair of WAC matches, hosting Kansas City Friday afternoon and Houston Baptist Sunday afternoon.

Last Week: San José State went 1-1 last week, losing at #1 Stanford 3-0 before coming home to open the WAC part of the schedule with a 3-2 win over CSU Bakersfield Saturday night.

Spartan Fact: The first-place Spartans got a boost from midfielder Nicolas Brenes as the junior tallied his first two goals of the season to help lift the club to a six-team tie atop the WAC standings.

Men's Water Polo (3-9)
This Week: The Spartan men's water polo team returns to the San José State main campus for home matches for the first time since the 2015 season. The team will host California Saturday at the SRAC before traveling to UC Davis on Sunday.

Last Week: The Spartans went 1-3 this past weekend at the Mountain Pacific Invitational. The team defeated Air Force 10-8 on Sunday.

Spartan Fact: Niels Hofmeijer led the Spartans in scoring with five goals against Air Force.

Women's Tennis
This Week: The Spartans travel up to Moraga for the SMC Fall Invite this weekend. 

Last Week: The Spartans began the 2019-20 season last weekend at the SDSU Fall Classic I. Alba Galindo Pedrero won her singles bracket to win one of seven singles titles. The doubles team of Savannah Sendar and Rozalina Youseva missed the championship flight after losing to an Aztec pair.

Men's Golf
This Week: The Spartans are currently competing at the Nick Watney Invitational at the Fort Washington Country Club.

Spartan Fact: Sean Yu tied for 25th place at the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship last week. Representing Chinese Taipei in the 42-country, province and island event, Yu shot a 290 in the 72-hole event.
