Spartans Dominant In Home Return

SAN JOSE, Calif. – It was a longtime coming for San Jose State women's swimming and diving. After not having a pool to call their own for four years, the Spartans welcomed the opportunity to host Pacific and UC Santa Cruz at the Student Recreation and Aquatic Center. SJSU dominated in their return, taking down Pacific 184.00-81.00 and UC Santa Cruz 210.00-66.00.

"We had a lot of great racing and diving today. This has been a very special day for the team, a very emotional day," head coach Sage Hopkins said. "It was the first opportunity that most of the team has had to race in front of their peers. We only have one swimmer that has done that, a fifth-year senior, and that was back in her freshman year. So this has just been a great day. Our performances were more than expected. We really challenged the team to step up and make a statement at this meet, and they definitely did."

The Spartans took care of business from the get go as they won all but three events. The trio of Lea Marrion, Katie McIntee and Rebecca Petoe had two wins apiece while Maddy Grimes (100 Back), Antoinette Loya (50 Free) and Kate Hanf (200 IM) also claimed victories. Additionally, they had four 1-2 finishes and one 1-2-3 finish in the 100 backstroke.

"Rebecca had two great wins, Lea had two great wins and Katie had two great wins. All of members of the program had great performances today," Hopkins said.

On the diving platform, Natasha Sodeno swept both the one meter and three meter dives with scores of 259.65 and 267.15, respectively.
