An All-America award, two all-state honorees and a incoming freshman named to an All-Decade team are recent honors for members of the 2020 San Jose State University Football signing class.
The JC Athletics Bureau in conjunction with the California Community College football coaches named defensive lineman Noah Wright of College of the Sequoias to its All-America team and its "Defensive Player of the Year." The 325-pound Wright who was born in Mountain View, Calif., was credited with 21.0 tackles for loss last season.
Defensive lineman Jay Kakiva of Fresno City College and linebacker Dion Leonard of Foothill College were named all-state players in Regions I and II, respectively. The 325-pound Kakiva was credited with 10.0 tackles for loss and 4.5 quarterback sacks. Leonard was in on 9.5 tackles for loss, forced a fumble and recovered two fumbles in 2019.
Running back Shamar Garrett of De La Salle High in Concord, who scored three touchdowns in the 2019 California Interscholastic Federation Open Championship game against St. John Bosco High was named to the Mercury News/East Bay Times Bay Area Preps HQ all-decade team. Garrett is one of two players among the 25 Bay Area great prep players still enrolled in high school.
