High Honors Continue As Basallo Earns High-Major Player Of The Week Nod

San José, Calif. - San José State sophomore Ayzhaina Basallo earned the College Sports Madness High-Major Player of the Week award on Monday following a pair of prime performances that led her team to a pair of victories to tip-off conference play.

The national High-Major Player of the Week honor goes to the most outstanding player competing in the Mountain West, Atlantic 10, CAA, C-USA, Horizon League, MAC, Missouri Valley, and WCC.

"Success for the whole team opens doors for individual players to be recognized," said head coach Jamie Craighead. "This is also great recognition for Shana and the countless hours she invests in her personal game. She didn't just fall into where she is at, she has worked for it."

She was also named the CSM Mountain West Player of the Week on Monday, bringing her to five total weekly awards in five weeks of play this season. The point guard was named the Mountain West Player of the Week by the league office on both Nov. 18 and Nov. 25 in addition to receiving one more conference Player of the Week nod from CSM on Nov. 25.

Basallo averaged 20 points and 4.5 assists per game while shooting 91 percent from the free throw line. The San Francisco product was everywhere on the stat sheet throughout the week, also totaling five rebounds and four steals.

The point guard is the first Spartan to win multiple Player of the Week awards in one season since Dezz Ramos received three of the honors on the 2016-17 campaign.

Basallo currently leads the nation in total points (226) and made free throws (72) as the month of December rolls on.

San José State's 7-3 record is the program's best start through 10 games in 15 years (also started 7-3 in the 2004-05 season). In addition, the team is off to a 2-0 start in Mountain West play for the first time since the 2015-16 campaign.

The team will return to action on Saturday afternoon against La Verne at the Provident Credit Union Event Center. Tip-off is set for 1:00 p.m.
