Spartans Defeat CSUB, 171.5-126.5, In Final Swim of 2019

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – San José State swimming and diving wrapped 2019 up with a big dual meet victory as they took down Cal State Bakersfield, 171.5-126.5, on Tuesday. SJSU won both relays and had eight individual winners in the victory.
 
The Spartans started the day off with a 1-2 finish in the 200 medley relay with the "A" team of Maddy Grimes, Rebecca Petoe, Lani Auva'a and Gabby Heng edging out the "B" team (Makenna Mathieson, Chloe Limargo, Antoinette Loya, and Kimberlee Giggey), with times of 1:46.84 and 1:48.63, respectively.
 
Making the switch to individual events, the 200 yard freestyle saw a 2-3-4 finish by Heng (1:55.82), Katie McIntee (1:57.59) and Kate Hanf (1:57.74) to pick up nine points. Makenna Mathieson took second in the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 59.90 and then the Spartans swept the 100 yard breaststroke with Petoe finishing first in 1:06.82 followed by Limargo (1:07.99) and Cali Rowland (1:08.39).
 
Maddy Sailors (23.90) and Antoinette Loya (24.28) picked up 13 points with a 1-2 finish in the 50 yard freestyle before the Spartans swept once again, this time in the 100 yard freestyle as Heng (52.66), Loya (53.42) and McIntee (54.12) swam their way to a 1-2-3 finish.
 
The Spartans took the top two spots in both the 200 yard backstroke with Auva'a (2:08.58) edging out Grimes (2:08.80) for the best time, and the 100 yard butterfly as Hanf (58.42) and Petoe (59.03) took care of business. Hanf closed out the individual events with her second win of the day in the 200 yard IM with a final of 2:11.63.
 
SJSU closed the afternoon with a first and third-place in the 400 yard freestyle relay.
 
Natasha Sondeno won both one and three-meter diving as she scored 221.03 on the 3-meter platform before scoring 235.88 in the 1-meter.
 
With calendar turned over to a new year (and decade) the Spartans return to action Friday, January 3, in San Diego as they face off with San Diego State, Air Force and Incarnate Word.
