Davis, Calif.—The 2020 season started strong for the San José State women's gymnastics team as the Spartans scored a 193.850 at the NorCal Classic to finish third in the five-team meet at UC Davis.
Taylor Chan led the Spartans with a 9.800 on beam and vault, while freshmen Cameron Kelperis and Shyan Phillips each had a 9.800 on vault. Emma Milne led the Spartan bars team with a 9.800.
The Spartans started the meet on bars with a 48.100. The returners started the lineup with Carli Orcutt at 9.550, Taylor Chan at 9.575 and Nikki Duggan at 9.525. Then, the freshmen took over on bars as Shyan Phillips scored a 9.650. A fall from Jada Mazury gave her an 8.950, before Emma Milne rounded out the Spartan lineup with a team-best 9.800.
Rotating to beam, the Spartans counted five solid scores in the team's 48.450. Tia Gin led the team off with a 9.550, followed by Mazury at 9.525. Chelsey Andrada and Shyan Phillips went back-to-back with 9.725s each. Chan led the Spartans with a 9.800, and Milne rounded out the scoring with a 9.650.
On floor, Gin led team off with a 9.750. Kelperis then made her Spartan debut with a 9.725. Andrada followed with a 9.675, Phillips at 9.625, Mazury at 9.725 and Chan at 9.475.
The vault team had the best score of the day with a 48.800 to round out the scoring. Gin started the rotation with a 9.650, followed by Andrada at 9.750 and Milne at 9.550. The Spartans then went back-to-back-to-back 9.800s with Kelperis, Phillips and Chan.
Phillips finished her first collegiate meet with a 38.800 in the all-around, while Chan had a 38.650.
"We are really proud of this team and the way they competed today," said Spartan head coach Joanne Bowers. "They started on bars which can be nerve-wracking for such a young team, but we did not have to count a fall. We hit our beam routines but know we can do better.
"They trust each other so much and have each others' back. We all know there is still a high ceiling for us to reach and plenty of bright spots."
The Spartans travel to Alaska Anchorage for a meet this Saturday at 2 p.m. AT/3 p.m. PT.
