The San José State women's gymnastics team travels to the 49th state of the union as the Spartans compete at Alaska Anchorage Saturday afternoon. The Spartans last competed in Anchorage at the 2015 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships when the team finished second.

LAST MEET
The Spartans posted a 193.850 Sunday afternoon at the NorCal Classic to finish third at the meet hosted by UC Davis. Taylor Chan led the Spartans with a 9.800 on beam and vault, while freshmen Cameron Kelperis and Shyan Phillips each had a 9.800 on vault. Emma Milne led the Spartan bars team with a 9.800.

SPARTAN COACHING STAFF
Head coach Joanne Bowers is in her second season at the helm of the San José State program. She is the sixth head coach in the program's history.  From 2007 to 2016, Bowers was the head women's gymnastics coach at the University of Washington.
James Williams and Jeffrey Langenstein are in their second seasons as assistant coaches for the Spartans. Former Spartan Stephanie Relova joined the coaching staff this summer after graduating in May and serves as the director of operations.

Shyan Phillips Gymnast of the Week January 13
After scoring a 38.800 in the all-around at the NorCal Classic, freshman gymnast Shyan Phillips was named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Women's Gymnast of the Week for January 6-12. In her first collegiate meet, Phillips finished fourth in the all-around with a 38.800. She started her collegiate career on bars with a 9.650, followed by a 9.725 on beam, tying for the second-best Spartan score on the apparatus. Phillips had a 9.625 on floor before finishing on vault with a 9.800 on vault, tying for fifth place.

In the final rotation Sunday, the final three Spartans each recorded a 9.800 on her vault. Cameron Kelperis started the scoring off with her 9.800, followed by Shyan Phillips and Taylor Chan. The three tied for fifth on vault, and the vault team scored the Spartans best apparatus score with a 48.800.

Two other Spartans scored a 9.800 at the meet. Emma Milne started the 9.800 scoring in her first collegiate routine on bars. Taylor Chan scored a 9.800 on beam in the next rotation.

GREAT FIRST IMPRESSIONS
Four Spartans made their collegiate debuts at the NorCal Classic. Emma Milne started the day with the first Spartan 9.800 of the day on bars. She also competed on beam (9.650) and vault (9.550). Shyan Phillips competed in the all-around and finished fourth at 38.800. She had a 9.800 on vault, 9.650 on bars, 9.725 on beam and 9.625 on floor. Jada Mazury

VAULT TEAM STARTS 2020 STRONG
The Spartan vault team recorded a 48.800 at the NorCal Classic, getting 9.800s from Cameron Kelperis, Shyan Phillips and Taylor Chan. The three tied for fifth place on the event. The team score is the highest for the team since the 2018 MPSF Championships.

•Scored a 9.750 on vault, 9.725 on beam and a 9.675 on floor at the NorCal Classic.

TAYLOR CHAN
•One of two all-arounders for the Spartans at the NorCal Classic

•Added 9.575 on bars and 9.475 on floor.

NIKKI DUGGAN
•Competed on bars.

UP NEXT
The Spartans host two meets the week of January 26.  On the 26th, San José State welcomes Seattle Pacific and Boise State to the Provident Credit Union Event Center for a 2 p.m. meet. SJSU then hosts UC Davis on Friday, January 31, at 7 p.m.
