Fullerton, Calif.----- San Jose State University freshmen Rozalina Youseva and Lara Marco Mas and junior Laura Malsert of each won a singles match on the first day of the second annual Fullerton Spring Invite women's tennis tournament.
Malsert and Marco Mas each won in straight sets over their Grand Canyon University opponent. Malsert topped Jana Weiss, 6-2, 6-2, and Marco Mas defeated Martina Lo Pumo, 6-2, 6-0.
Youseva came back from a set down to defeat Grand Canyon's Natasha Puehse, 6-7, 6-1, 1-0 (10-5 tiebreaker). Marco Mas and Youseva each picked up their team-best eighth singles win of the season when including the fall semester tournament schedule.
The Spartans were not as fortunate in doubles action on the first day of the spring season. Three San Jose State pairs were defeated by three Santa Clara University duos in matches delayed three hours due to wet grounds.
Weather-permitting, the five-team, three-day tournament continues with doubles matches beginning Saturday, January 18, at 9:00 a.m. Besides San Jose State, Santa Clara and Grand Canyon, Pacific and host Cal State Fullerton are playing on the opening weekend of the spring season.
