Spartans Go 1-1 Against #13 Fresno State & #3 UC Irvine At Cal Cup

Berkeley, Calif.—— #18 San Jose State went 1-1 on the first day of the Cal Cup. The Spartans defeated #13-Fresno State, 7-6, and lost to #3-UC Irvine, 14-6, in a pair of non-conference contests.

    Lili Urvari and Olga Descalzi Portell were the top San Jose State (2-3) scorers in the Fresno State win with two goals each. Tyanna Supreme, Riley Agerbeek and Caroline Kerwin. 

    San Jose State never trailed against the Bulldogs. The Spartans broke open a 2-2 second-quarter tie with consecutive goals by Kerwin, Descalzi Portell, Urvari's second score of the match,  and Agerbeek for a 6-2 lead midway through the third quarter. Fresno State responded with three unanswered goals to cut the deficit to 6-5 before Descalzi Portell scored with 0:56 remaining in the third quarter in what turned out to be the Spartans' final goal of the match.

    Fresno State's Isabella Sonkoly pulled the Bulldogs within a goal, 7-6 with 5:27 to play. After that the Spartans yielded no more for the win as Spartan goalkeeper Hannah Henry was credited with a season-high 11 saves. 

    The second match for the Spartans was a 14-6 non-conference loss against #3 UC Irvine. 

    The Spartan scorers were Agerbeek and Lior Ben David with two goals each and Descalzi Portell and Zsofia Botka each with one. 

    The Spartans were the first to score in the match by Descalzi Portell followed by two UC Irvine goals. The first quarter finished out with Agerbeek's first goal and two more Irvine goals. The second quarter started with a goal for UC Irvine followed by Botka's goal for San Jose State. UC Irvine scored the last goal of the first half and the score was 6-3 UC Irvine heading into the third quarter. UC Irvine scored the only goals of the third quarter and the first two goals of the fourth quarter. Agerbeek scored her second goal of the match for the Spartans followed by David's first goal. UC Irvine scored another goal and David scored her second goal for San Jose State. The match finished after UC Irvine scored their final goal.

    Spartan goalkeeper Hannah Henry was credited with ten saves. 

    The Spartans will return to action tomorrow for the second day of the Cal Cup. San Jose State will be facing off against #6 California at 11:00 a.m. and #12 UC Davis at 2:15 p.m..
