The 2020 San José State women's gymnastics team starts the season this Sunday, January 12, at the NorCal Classic hosted by UC Davis at 2 p.m. The Spartans will compete against California, Sacramento State, Stanford and UC Davis. This is the ninth consecutive year the team has started the season with the NorCal meet.
Leading the team are seniors Chelsey Andrada and Taylor Chan. The two have combined two help the Spartans win two Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships and have three individual MPSF titles between them. Andrada won the vault title in 2018 with a career-best 9.875. Chan is the reigning MPSF All-Around Champion after scoring a career-best 39.300 at last year's championship. She also tied for the floor title in 2017.
Chan is a three-time NCAA Regional qualifier. Last season, she competed in the all-around where she recorded a 9.850 on floor, her best event. Previously, she competed on the vault and floor as a sophomore and a floor as a freshman. Chan is a three-time first team All-MPSF honoree on vault and floor.
Others returning for the Spartans include junior Nikki Duggan who was a second team All-MPSF honoree on bars last season as she finished seventh on bars at the MPSF Championships. The sophomore class consists of Tia Gin, Jasmine Henley, Antonia Marquez and Carli Orcutt.
This year's freshmen class includes Simone Adams, Cameron Kelperis, Jada Mazury, Emma Milne, Shyan Phillips and Alexa Solomon.
Mazury and Milne come to California from Canada, joining Chan on the Spartan team as the three Canadians. Mazury is a three-time Canadian national championship medalist and three-time Alberta provincial champion.
Milne has competed internationally as she started the school year by representing Canada at the 2019 FIG World Challenge Cup in Mersin, Turkey. She advanced to the finals on bars, beam and floor.
The Spartans also make an impact in the classroom and the community. Last year six gymnasts were honored as MPSF All-Academic Scholar-Athletes, and three were named WCGA Scholastic All-Americans.
A familiar face to Spartan fans will be found on the sidelines this year as former gymnast Stephanie Relova has joined the coaching staff as the Director of Operations. Relova was honored over the summer as the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation honoree for the 2019 NCAA Woman of the Year. She competed for three seasons for the Spartans on bars, beam and floor. Additionally, she was the national runner-up for the 2019 Arthur Ashe Jr., Sports Scholar Female Scholar Athlete of the Year.
San José State hosts four meets this season, starting with the Alumni/Donor meet on Sunday, January 26, as Seattle Pacific and Boise State come to the Provident Credit Union Event Center. Five days later, UC Davis visits San Jose for a dual meet. Alaska Anchorage comes to San Jose on Valentine's Day. The Spartans close out the home schedule with Sacramento State for a Sunday afternoon matinee on March 15.
Tickets for all home meets are available online or at the door. Adults are $8, youth 12 & under are $5 and youth in club gear are $3. SJSU students are free with a valid Tower ID Card. All seats are general admission. For more information, please call the Spartan Ticket Office at 408-924-SJTX (7589).
