Spartans Advance To Championship Match at Lamkin Invitational

Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.—Three Spartans went 2-0 Monday to lead the San José State women's golf team to match-play wins over Cal State and San Marcos and Washington State Monday at the Lamkin Invitational at The Farms Golf Club in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.

With the victories, San José State will now play Mountain West foe and host San Diego State in the championship match on Tuesday.

Antonia Malate, Kajsa Arwefjäll and Ysabel Tran each recorded wins against Cal State San Marcos and Washington State. Natasha Andrea Oon won 6&5 over Clair Hogle from San Marcos, but was all square with Cougar Jiye Ham to split the team point. Maddie White fell 4&3 in both of her matches.

In the semifinals against Washington State, Tran never trailed in her match with Janine Surge. Tran was one up after five holes, even after six holes, and then took her lead for good with a birdie on #18 (her seventh hole of the round) and never looked back. She made a birdie on #7 to go five up and win the match.

Malate was down one after three holes (13-15), but two holes later, she went back up one and never relinquished the lead to Emily Baumgart. Malate made par on #10 for the 3&2 win.

Arwefjäll was down one for the first five holes played (10-14), before making a birdie on #15 to square the match and take the lead with a par on #16 and a bogey by her opponent Amy Chu. Arwefjäll kept her lead until #5 when the match was squared and took the lead back for good on the next hole.

Oon went up one on her sixth hole played (#16) as she made a birdie on the par-three hole. She maintained her lead for the next seven holes before Ham squared the match on #6. Both players finished with pars over the next four holes to halve the match.

Against Cal State San Marcos, Tran, Oon and Malate never trailed in their matches. Arwefjäll was down one after two holes, but took the lead for good on her fourth hole (#13) and went up with three holes to go.

The Spartans and Aztecs, the top-two teams of the tournament and MW, begin championship match play Tuesday morning at 8:24 a.m. Fans can follow live scoring at https://www.birdiefire.com/tournament/62907/
