Los Angeles, Calif.——#13 San Jose State went 0-2 in matches vs. UC Irvine and Long Beach State in the mini tournament hosted by UCLA.
The first match for the Spartans was a 11-7 non-conference loss to #5-UC Irvine. Riley Agerbeek was the top scorer of the match with three goals.
UC Irvine took an early lead by scoring three goals in the first three minutes of the game, 3-0. San Jose State trimmed the deficit to 4-3 after Lili Urvari and Olga Descalzi Portell scored for the Spartans to close out the first quarter.
The Anteaters and the Spartans traded two-goal spurts with Lior Ben David and Agerbeek scoring for San Jose State to keep the Spartans within a goal, 6-5. UC Irvine held onto its lead for the rest of the match for the 11-7 win.
Spartan goalkeeper Hannah Henry was credited with five saves.
The second match for the Spartans was a 13-11 non-conference loss against #14-Long Beach State. Tyanna Supreme and Descalzi Portell were the top scorers for San Jose State with three goals each.
Long Beach State had a 4-3 lead after the first quarter. The Spartans tired to take the lead in the second after goals by Emma Hank and Descalzi Portell but the score was 6-5 heading into the third quarter. Isabella Schmidt tied the score 8-8 with less than two minutes left in the third quarter.
Supreme scored to give the Spartans their last lead of the match, 9-8. but Long Beach's Paige Bennett and Anne de Kleer, on a buzzer beater goal at the end of the third quarter, gave the 49'ers a 10-9 lead going into the fourth quarter.
Supreme tied up the score twice more at 10-10 and 11-11 before Long Beach State pulled ahead for the win.
Spartan goalkeeper Hannah Henry was credited with four saves.
The Spartans will return to action Saturday February 15 in a non-conference match against UC Davis.
