MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – San Jose State swimming and diving kicked off the 2020 Mountain West Championships with a bang as two relays qualified for the National Invitational Championships. Additionally, Gabby Heng and Gabriela Vieira each qualified individually with their legs in the 800 freestyle relay and 200 medley relay, respectively.
Both relays finished in seventh in their respective races. The 200 medley relay of Vieira, Chloe Limargo, Antoinette Loya and Sailors finished with the ninth-fastest time in program history in 1:41.37. Vieira led off with the No. 6 all-time time in the 50 backstroke with a time of 25.86.
The Spartans then made the move to the 800 freestyle relay with Heng, Katie McIntee, Kate Hanf and Erin Wayman finishing in 7:23.29, the eighth-fastest time in program history. Heng's leadoff leg of 1:48.56 is the third-fastest in school history.
"Our senior class lead the way tonight with many great performances and both relays placing seventh," head coach Sage Hopkins said. "Madelyn Sailors also stepped up in a huge way anchoring our medley relay. We are really excited to get the individual events started tomorrow morning."
Overall, eight Spartan Swimmers earned a spot in the National Invitational Championships on the day. More will look to join tomorrow as day two marks the beginning of individual competition.
The Spartans are currently in ninth as a team with 96 points. San Diego State leads the field with 202 points.
