San José, Calif.—The San José State softball team picked up a pair of wins Friday at the Silicon Valley Classic at Spartan Softball Field to extend the team's winning streak to 12 games, a tying the school record set last season.
San José State 9, California Baptist 0 (5 innings)
The Spartans used a six-run second inning to break the game open against the Lancers after Rayohna Sagapolu scored on a bases-loaded walk in the first inning. Grace Garvey started of the second inning with a home run to left field. The Spartans then recorded four consecutive hits by Mackenzie Drake, Sagapolu, Makayla Englestad, Cassidy Clark to score two runs. Janessa Lozano hit a sacrifice fly to score Englestad, and Clark and Alyssa Graham scored on a two-out double by Jenessa Ullegue.
The team added two runs in the third inning as Lozano singled with two outs, and Suzy Brookshire and Sagapolu scored. Sagapolu ended the game 3-for-3 at the plate with three runs scored.
In the circle Shannon Haddad pitched a four-hitter, striking out a season-high 11 batters and walking one.
San José State 3, Cal Poly 1
The Spartans took advantage of a Cal Poly fielding error in the third inning to score two runs to take the lead for good. With the bases loaded and two outs, Jocylyn Vidal hit a ball to the short stop who bobbled the ball which allowed Englestad to score from third, and everyone was safe. A Mustang wild pitch then allowed Clark to score from third for the second run.
In the fifth, Clark scored her second run of the game as Graham singled to right field with the bases loaded.
Ilona Sullivan picked up her third win of the season it the circle as she pitched five innings. She allowed four hits, one earned run and one walk. She struck out five of the 20 batters she faced. Haddad recorded her second save of the season with two inning of relief with one hit and one strikeout.
San José State is now 12-2 on the season and continues play at the Silicon Valley Classic Saturday afternoon with games against Yale at 2 p.m., and North Dakota at 4:30 p.m. Tickets are available at the gate.
