Spartans Ahead At Half; Lose 8-6 To #5 Arizona State

Irvine, Calif.——On the first day of the Barbara Kalbus Invitational, #13 San Jose State lost, 8-6, to #5 Arizona State.

    The top Spartan were Lili Urvari and Olga Descalzi Portell with two goals each. 

    San Jose State (4-8) took a quick 2-0 lead in the first quarter on goals from Descalzi Portell and Tyanna Supreme. Arizona State (6-4) tied the score at 2-2 before the end of the quarter. Goals by Lior Ben David and Urvari gave the Spartans a 4-3 halftime advantage.
     The Sun Devils came out strong in the third quarter scoring three consecutive goals and added an early fourth quarter score for a 7-4 lead before Descalzi Portell scored with 6:50 remaining in the match. Urvari's second goal with 1:09 to go turned out to be the final tally for either team.
    San Jose State outshot Arizona State, 35-22, but came up on the short end of the scoreboard.

    Goalkeeper Hannah Henry was credited with eight saves for the Spartans. Itzhiana Baca stopped 10 shots for Arizona State.

    San Jose State returns to action Saturday, February 22 for the second day of the Barbara Kalbus Invitational. The Spartans will face UC Davis in their first match of the day at 9:15 a.m.
