Spartans Take a 12-11 Victory in Overtime Match Against UC Davis

Newport Beach, Calif.——#13 San Jose State University went 1-1 the second day of the Barbara Kalbus Invitational. The first match was a 12-11 comeback overtime win against #15 UC Davis.

Emma Hank scored the Spartans' game-winning goal in the second overtime period with 0:01 left on the clock. Tyanna Supreme was the top scorer for San Jose State with a career-high five goals. Two of Supreme's five goals came after the Spartans were trailing 10-7 with 0:48 to go in the first overtime period. A power-play goal and a 5-meter penalty shot pulled San Jose State to 10-9 heading into the second 3:00 overtime period.

Isabella Schmidt and Olga Descalzi Portell each scored in the second overtime to tie the match at 10-10 and 11-11, respectively prior to Hank's game-winning goal. Hank had come into the match scoring just once on the season.

During regulation play, San Jose State, like UC Davis, lost a three-goal lead, the last at 6-3 at 4:56 in the third quarter after a Descalzi Portell power play goal. The Spartans had one of their better power-play performances in the win converting on 4-of-10 chances.

The win was the Spartans' second one-goal win over UC Davis in eight days. On February 15, Lili Urvari scored with 0:03 remaining in the match for an 8-7 San Jose State victory.

In the Spartans' nightcap, #8 UC San Diego outlasted San Jose State, 8-5.

Descalzi Portell was the top scorer for the Spartans with two goals.

UC San Diego never trailed in the match. The score was tied twice including 4-4 at 5:10 in the third quarter on a Supreme goal. A Bailey Stubblefield score with 7:09 to go in the match left the Spartans trailing 6-5, the closest San Jose State would get the rest of the way. The Spartans were 5-of-28 shooting the ball and missed their last six shot attempts.

San Jose State will face off against Loyola Marymount for 11th place in the Barbara Kalbus Invitational, Sunday, February 23, at 11:30 a.m.
