San José, Calif.—The top four hitters in the Spartan lineup had seven hits and drove in three of the team's five runs as the San José State softball team extended its winning streak to 15 games with a 5-0 shutout of Santa Clara Wednesday at Spartan Softball Field.
Suzy Brookshire led the Spartan hitting attack, going 3-for-3 at the plate with two doubles and a run scored. Cassidy Clark went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Rayohna Sagapolu and Makayla Englestad each had a hit, run scored and RBI in the win. The team's other two hits came from Vicky Gutierrez, who drove in a run, and Mackenzie Drake, who scored one of the five runs.
Reigning Mountain West Pitcher of the Week Shannon Haddad improved her record to 9-1 on the season with her sixth complete game and fourth shutout of the season. She struck out seven and allowed only two hits in 25 batters faced.
The Spartans scored two runs in the fourth and fifth innings and added a run in the sixth. In the fourth, Englestad started the inning with a triple to right field and scored on a Clark double to left center. Clark advanced to third on a Brookshire single and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jocylyn Vidal.
In the fifth, Drake started the hit parade with a double to left center and scored on a Sagapolu single. Sagapolu, who advanced to third on a Bronco throwing error, scored on an Englestad sacrifice fly to right field.
Brookshire started the sixth with a double down the right field line and scored on a Gutierrez single.
San José State takes its 15-2 record to the San Diego Classic this weekend to face Mount Saint Mary's, Long Beach State, St. John's, Weber State and Brown.
