Colorado Springs, Colo.—Fifty-three (53) San José State University student-athletes from five sports were named to the Fall 2019 Academic All-Mountain West team.
Football had 22 players honored, followed by women's soccer with 14, volleyball with seven, women's cross country with six and men's cross country with four. Women's soccer, men's cross country, and women's cross country had more than 50 percent of the team earn Academic All-Mountain West honors. Football was one of five conference schools with at least 20 Academic All-Mountain honorees.
Five Spartan student-athletes received their fourth Academic All-Mountain West honor – Thaliana Grajeda (volleyball), Carlie James (women's soccer), Josh Love (football), Jose Piña (men's cross country), and Jennifer Sandoval (women's cross country).
Eight student-athletes received honors for the third time, while 18 Spartans earned Academic All-MW recognition for the second year.
"Congratulations to the student-athletes from our fall sports earning Academic All-Mountain West honors," said Eileen Daley, senior associate athletics director for academic and student services. "Our recruitment of motivated students to participate in NCAA Division I athletics and investment in academic support resources and personnel continues to pay off.
"We are extremely proud the women's soccer and both cross country teams had more than half their team members earn this academic award. With men's water polo, four of our fall sports teams had more than half the team receive an individual conference academic honor."
To earn Academic All-Mountain West recognition, a student-athlete must complete at least one semester, maintain a 3.00 or better cumulative grade-point average and participate in at least 50 percent of the contests for the season.
Across the league, 607 student-athletes have been named to the fall 2019 Academic All-MW team. Sports recognized include men's and women's cross country, football, women's soccer and women's volleyball.
San Jose State student-athletes from fall sports teams earned 72 individual conference academic honors from the Mountain West, Western Athletic Conference in men's soccer, and Golden Coast Conference in men's water polo.
