Irving, Texas----- For the second year in a row, it was a program record for San Jose State University football with five players named to the National Football Foundation's Hampshire Honor Society.
Tight end Brett Foley, defensive back Chandler Hawkins, quarterback Josh Love, offensive lineman Deano Motes and running back DeJon Packer are seniors from the 2019 Spartan team invited into the Society.
The previous high for a Spartans senior class was three from the 2018 squad.
Football student-athletes from all NCAA and NAIA Divisions qualify for admission by maintaining a 3.2 cumulative grade-point average or better throughout their college careers, been significant players on their team during the 2019 season, and have completed their final year of eligibility.
"We are pleased to honor another impressive group of athletes as part of this year's Hampshire Honor Society," said NFF President & CEO Steve Hatchell. "For more than a decade, the Hampshire Honor Society has served as a powerful vehicle for schools to recognize their college football players who have distinguished themselves both academically and athletically, and we congratulate the schools and each of these young men for their commitment to excellence in all aspects of their lives."
The five San Jose State football alums are among 1,451 student-athletes from 365 colleges and universities were named. The NFF's Hampshire Honor Society is an extension of the organization's national scholar-athlete program. More than 12,000 student-athletes have been honored since the program's inception.
Previous Spartan inductees include defensive end Travis Johnson (2012); guard Nicholas Kaspar and offensive tackle Jon Meyer (2013); linebacker Vince Buhagiar (2014); offensive lineman Wes Schweitzer (2015); linebacker Mark Amann and wide receiver Tim Crawley (2016); offensive lineman Nate Velichko (2017); and quarterback Michael Carrillo, kicker Bryce Crawford, and long snapper Harrison Hoffman (2018).
