Oon Receives Top MW Honor, Malate, Arwefjäll Second Team Honorees

Colorado Springs, Colo.—For the third time in four seasons, the top Mountain West Conference Women's Golf honoree comes from San José State.

Sophomore Natasha Andrea Oon was named the 2019-20 MW Women's Golfer of the Year after she led the conference in stroke average at 71.64. Oon had three top-10 finishes during the shortened season including second place at the Minnesota Invitational. She finished the year ranked 27th nationally according to GolfStat. Last week, she was named an honorable mention All-America honoree by the Women's Golf Coaches' Association.

Oon is the third Spartan to win MW Women's Golfer of the Year honors, following My Leander (2017) and Abegail Arevalo (2019). Oon also received first team All-MW honors for the second consecutive season.

Two Spartans were also named to the second team – Antonia Malate and Kajsa Arwefjäll. Malate, a sophomore from Seaside, Calif., recorded a 73.86 stroke average in 14 rounds played. She had the best tournament of her career with a sixth-place finish at the Juli Inkster at Meadow Club Invitational. She started the tournament with two of her best collegiate rounds, shooting 71 and 70.

Arwefjäll, a freshman from Hollviken, Sweden, had a 74.43 stroke average in 14 rounds played. Her best finish of the season came in the final tournament of the year as she tied for 13th at the Juli Inkster at Meadow Club Invitational.

"I am really happy for all three players. We really wish we could have finished the season," said Spartan head coach Dana Dormann. "Natasha was getting herself ready to have another strong finish this spring. She works very hard and is a complete player.

"Antonia had a really big improvement in her game this year, and we are excited to see what the next few years will bring. Kajsa was a great addition and being named to the second team all-conference in her freshman year is tremendous. I can't wait to see what the future holds for her as a team player."
