Colorado Springs, Colo.— Another positive accomplishment for San José State University student-athletes as a school-record 67 received a 2019-120 Mountain West Scholar-Athlete Award for their performances in the classroom during their athletic career.
The MW Scholar-Athlete Award is one of the highest academic honors bestowed by the conference. To be eligible for the award, student-athletes must have completed two semesters at the institution, have a 3.5 or better grade point average and have participated in a competition in a Mountain West-sponsored sport.
The Spartan student-athletes represent 14 sports, led by women's swimming and diving with 13 honorees and followed by softball with 10, baseball with eight and women's soccer with seven.
Eight Spartans have received four Mountain West Scholar-Athlete recognitions - Makayla Englestad (SB), Kate Hanf (WSW), Gabby Heng (WSW), Carlie James (WSOC) Janessa Lozano (SB) Jacqueline Nisson (WSW), Natasha Sondeno (WSW), Jeanette Zambrano (WT&F)
"Congratulations to our 67 student-athletes earning a Mountain West Scholar-Athlete award this year. The 2019-20 academic year was our best year of academic performance collectively by our student-athletes and this award is another reflection of our accomplishments. It always is one of the highlights of the year to join our academic support staff and present our student-athletes with their Mountain West Scholar-Athlete medallions at one of our home athletics contests," said San José State Athletics Director Marie Tuite
The Spartan Scholar-Athletes helped the Mountain West to a new league-record 1,023 student-athletes recognized.
