Las Vegas, Nev.—Nine San José State University women's swimmers advanced to the finals Friday night at the 2021 Mountain West Championships hosted by UNLV.
Rebecca Petoe advanced to the championship head of the 100 butterfly where she finished eighth at 56.64. In preliminaries, she swam a career-best 55.96 to advance to the finals. Petoe also swam in the bonus finals of the 100 breaststroke where she was 20th at 1:05.97.
The 200 freestyle relay of Reagan Mathieson, Makenna Mathieson, Petoe and Kayla Craft-Williams finished eighth at 1:37.13.
In the 100 butterfly, Petoe finished eighth, while Negin Tehranian-Torghabeh was 24th at 1:01.13.
Regan Mathieson qualified for the consolation race of the 200 freestyle and finished 16th at 1:53.41.
Three Spartans swam in the 100 breastroke. Izzie Fraire and Cali Rowland advanced to the consolation finals where Fraire was 13th at 1:04.55, and Rowland finished 15th at 1:04.82. Petoe finished 20th at 1:05.97.
In the final event of the evening, Craft-Williams finished 12th in the 100 backstroke with a season-best 56.69. She advanced to the consolation finals after posting a 56.94 in the prelims. Others placing for the Spartans were Makenna Mathieson 21st at 58.67, Madison Grimes 22nd at 58.76 and Megan Green 24th at 1:02.19.
The Spartans are in eighth place in the team standings. San Diego State and UNLV are separated by 10 points at the top of the standings.
The final day of the MW Championships begins Saturday with preliminaries at 11 a.m. Finals begin Saturday night at 6:30 p.m. Fans can watch both session on the Mountain West Network.
