Spartans Fifth After First Round Of Amer Ari Invitational Men's Golf

Waimea, Hawai'i----- Senior Sean Yu and freshman Carl Corpus led the way for San Jose State University with scores of four-under par 68 and one-under par 71, respectively, in the opening round of the 32nd annual Amer Ari Invitational men's golf tournament.
 
As a team, the Spartans finished their first 18 holes of the 54-hole eight team tournament at one-under par 287 on the par 72, 6,875-yard Hapuna Golf Course. San Jose State With five holes to go, San Jose State was seven-under par, but gave back six shots over the final two holes in the five-player, count-four format.   
 
Besides Yu's 68, good for a seventh-place tie in the individual race, and Corpus tying for 18th, the Spartans also counted the 74's by Caleb Shetler and Kristopher Stiles. Shetler was as low as 1-under through 16 holes; Stiles, one was one under through five. San Jose State did not use Nate Jetter's 80 in the five-player, count best four scoring format for each of the tournament's three days.
 
Georgia Tech is the first-round team leader with a 14-under par 274. Arizona State is a very close second at 275 and Southern California rounds out the top three at 280. Washington at 285 also is ahead of the Spartans. Oregon State at 289; Hawai'I, 302; and Hawai'i-Hilo at 306 round out the small field of eight teams.
 
Three Arizona State golfers are among the top six individuals heading into the February 3 second round. Playing as an individual entry, Arizona State's Blake Wagoner has a comfortable three-shot lead with a 63. Noah Woolsey of Washington is second; David Puig and Cameron Sisk, both from Arizona State are tied for third with Connor Howe of Georgia Tech and Isaiah Kanno of Hawai'I with 67's.
