#15-Spartans Drop 16-7 Decision To #3-Stanford

Stanford, Calif.----- Riley Agerbeek, Sierra Painter and Lior Ben David each scored twice in San Jose State University's 16-7 loss to #3-ranked Stanford in a non-conference women's water polo match.

The Spartans' seven goals were the most scored by a San Jose State team (1-3) against Stanford in 10 matches since a 17-8 loss to the Cardinal on February 16, 2016.

Olga Descalzi Portell, the team's leading goal scorer, accounted for the Spartan' other goal, a first-quarter tally tying the score at 1-1.

Stanford (3-1) opened a comfortable 6-1 by the 3:30 mark of the second quarter. Sarah Klass scored two of her four goals during the Cardinal rally. Stanford led 9-2 in the third quarter before the Spartans showed some life offensively as Painter, Ben David, and Agerbeek poured in consecutive goals in a  0:49 span to trim the deficit to 10-5.

Ben David and Agerbeek teamed up again in the scoring column on back-to-back goals midway through the fourth quarter leaving the Spartans trailing 11-7, the closest they were to the Cardinal since the second quarter.

"We had a lot of opportunities in terms of being an offensive threat. We earned a lot of good power plays today. Typically, we don't get a lot of drives in (on offense) on Stanford. It was fun to see a really active offense," said San Jose State women's water polo head coach Beth Harberts. "The next level for us to see is connect and put away our shots. We have great shooters. We're getting great looks. We're just not able to connect."

The Spartans were outshot, 38-25, and were only 2-of-12 on their 6-on-5 power plays. Stanford was 4-of-10 on its power play.

Jewel Roemer, who had three goals, and Chloe Hariblas, who led all players with five goals accounted for three consecutive unanswered insurance scores for Stanford.

San Jose State goalkeeper Hannah Henry was credited with a season-high 14 saves including a stop of a five-meter penalty shot in the first half. Henry now has five saves on five-meter penalty shots this season.

"Hannah's been making some impressive saves that really should be fielded by some of our defensive field blocks and she is still able to make it happen," the Spartans' head coach said about her #1 goalkeeper.

San Jose State opens Mountain Pacific Sports Federation action next weekend, at Arizona State in single matches, March 20 and 21.
