FRESNO, Calif. - San Jose State softball finally found the scoreboard but was unable to come away with a victory as the Spartans dropped Sunday's series finale to Fresno State by a final of 4-1 at Margie Wright Diamond.
The Spartans (4-13, 0-3 MW) fared better against Bulldog Ace Hailey Dolcini in round No. 2, tallying three hits against her, including a solo home run by Jocylyn Vidal in the fifth inning to cut the deficit to 2-1. The moon shot was Vidal's second of the season and was also the second hit of the series for the sophomore from La Puente, Calif. She also had a solid series in the circle with three hits allowed in 7.2 innings, including 2.0 innings in Sunday's finale.
After Vidal's homer broke up Dolcini's no-hit bid and put the Spartans back in a position to take a lead, Fresno State (15-6, 3-0 MW) quickly responded in the home half of the fifth as a 2-RBI single gave the Bulldogs a 4-1 lead and secured their series sweep.
Dolcini (9-3) worked another complete game and struck out 14 batters in the win. Caroline Bowman dropped to 0-7 on the season for the Spartans after allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits in 4.0 innings of work.
The Spartans return to their home diamond for a three-game set against Nevada beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. PT.
