FRESNO, Calif. - San Jose State softball dropped both games of their Mountain West opening doubleheader at Fresno State, falling 9-0 and 4-0 to the Bulldogs on Saturday at Margie Wright Diamond.
The Spartan offense was held to five total hits on the day while Fresno State tallied 13 knocks including a pair of homers. San Jose State drops to 4-12 (0-2 MW) while the Bulldogs improved to 14-6 (2-0 MW). The teams will meet one final time tomorrow for a 12:00 p.m. PT first pitch.
QUICK HITTERS
Game One - Fresno State 9, San Jose State 0
- The Spartan offense was stifled by Bulldog ace Hailey Dolcini (8-3) as she worked a six-inning no-hitter.
- It is the first time San Jose State has been held hitless since Feb. 11, 2016 in an 8-0 loss to BYU.
- Jocylyn Vidal switched from shortstop to pitcher and had a solid first three innings of relief duty as she held the Bulldog bats to zero hits until the sixth inning when she gave up a single and 3-run home run that ended the contest early.
- Jenessa Ullegue (4-5) started in the circle and was responsible for six runs (five earned) in two innings.
Game Two - Fresno State 4, San Jose State 0
- In contrast to the first game, the Spartan offense responded nicely by out-hitting the Bulldogs 5-4.
- Freshman Ashley Rico had two of SJSU's five hits.
- The Spartans didn't have any trouble putting runners on base, but struggled to bring them home as they finished the game with seven left on base.
- Caroline Bowman (0-6) breezed through the first couple of innings before Fresno State launched a one-out grand slam in the third for the game's only scoring play.
- Vidal once again pitched in relief duty, working two perfect frames to finish things out.
- Fresno State starter Danielle Lung (2-1) pitched a complete game with seven strikeouts to pick up the win.
