This Week in San José State Athletics is here to catch you up on last week's action and see what's ahead for the Spartans!

A big Spartan thank you to the readers of the Mercury News who voted San José State Athletics as the best college team in the Silicon Valley area, as published in the March 28 newspaper and online. 

Women's Tennis (8-0)
This Week: The Spartans play their final home matches of the season this week as the team hosts Nevada and Fresno State. SJSU plays Nevada on Thursday and Fresno State on Saturday. The two teams will play a neutral match on Friday.

Last Week:  The Spartans remained undefeated as the team defeated Wyoming, 4-3. The match against Colorado State was canceled due to COVID issues in the Ram program.

Spartan Fact: In a déjà vu of the team's previous match, the final point of the match went down to the final singles match of the day. Jovana Babic improved her record to 5-0 on the season with a 6-4, 6-3, win at #6 singles to keep the undefeated streak alive for San José State.

Volleyball (6-8, 6-8)
This Week: The Spartans play the final two matches of the season this week - at Utah State on Thursday and at Wyoming on Saturday.

Last Week: The Spartans went 2-0 in the final two home matches of the season with wins over New Mexico (3-2) and San Diego State (3-0).

Spartan Fact: Haylee Nelson was named the MW Offensive Player of the Week for the second time in three weeks. Nelson helped lead the Spartans to home wins over New Mexico (3-2) and San Diego State (3-0). She hit .342 for the week as she averaged 4.50 kills, 1.88 digs and 5.06 points per set.  Against New Mexico, she led the Spartans with a season-best 23 kills and added 10 digs for her eighth double-double of the season. Nelson also posted a career-best four service aces against the Lobos. In the win over San Diego State, Nelson hit .400 for the match with 13 kills and added five digs and a block.

Men's Soccer (2-1-2, 2-1-2 WAC)
This Week: The Spartans are in action twice this week, hitting the road to face Utah Valley before returning to Spartan Soccer Complex to host Incarnate Word.

Last Week: San Jose State earned its biggest victory of the season, a dominant 4-0 victory at California Baptist. 

Spartan Fact: Senior Willy Miranda scored three goals in Friday's victory. The hat trick marked the program's first in six years (Rory Knibbs, 2015 vs. Sacramento State).

This Week: The Spartans return to action for four non-conference contests this week, hosting California before hitting the road for a three-game set at Cal Poly. 

Last Week: San Jose State lifted the lid on the 2021 campaign against first-place San Diego State. The Spartans took one game from the Aztecs, rolling to a 12-7 victory in the second of two games on Saturday. 

Spartan Fact: The 12-run explosion marked the program's first double-digit run output in an Opening Day game since Feb. 20, 2009 (15-5 vs. Saint Joseph's).

Women's Soccer (0-6-1, 0-6-1)
This Week: The Spartans return to the South Bay for their final two home matches of the abbreviated season. SJSU will host Boise State on Friday and Nevada on Sunday in what will serve as Senior Day for the Spartan trio of Karlee Pottorff, Lauola Amanoni and Bella Bowers. 

Last Week: SJSU made an 11-day road trip with four road matches spread across the west. The Spartans were 0-3-1 in said matches. 

Spartan Facts: Sophomore goalkeeper Zoe Aguirre is the Mountain West leader in both total saves (38) and saves per game (6.33). Her saves per game average also checks in as No. 20 in NCAA Division I.

Women's Golf
This Week: The Spartans are getting ready for next week's tournament as the team plays at the Silverado Showdown. 

Last Week: The Spartans finished 12th at the PING/ASU Invitational.

Spartan Fact: Antonia Malate was the top Spartan finisher as she tied for 17th at one-over 217. Malate finished with a 75 in the final round, making two birdies and 11 pars on the day.

Men's Golf
This Week:  The team is off this week after competing at two tournaments last week.

Last Week: The Spartans finished sixth out of 15 teams at the Oregon Duck Invitational and 22nd out of 28 teams at The Goodwin.

Spartan Fact #1: Bryce Wortman had a hole-in-on during last Thursday's first round of The Goodwin. He used a six-iron at the 14th hole.

Spartan Fact #2: The 74th Western Intercollegiate presented by Topgolf, April 12-14, at the Pasatiempo Golf Club in Santa Cruz, Calif., is two weeks away. The GOLF Channel will provide three hours of live coverage each day.

Softball (4-13, 0-3)
This Week: The Spartans are currently on a pause due to non-COVID related issues within the program.

Last Week: SJSU was on a pause due to non-COVID related issues within the program. 

Spartan Fact: Janessa Lozano and Alyssa Graham rank fourth and fifth, respectively, in the Mountain West in batting average. Lozano is hitting at a .349 clip while Graham is just behind at .348.

Track & Field
This Week: The Spartans will look to continue their great start to the 2021 campaign as they return to action at the Stanford Invitational on The Farm. 

Last Week: No action.

Spartan Fact: Sophomore Gracious Togiai set a school record and took first place in the women's shot put two weeks ago in Sacramento with a mark of 14.29m.

Women's Water Polo (1-7, 0-4 MPSF)
Last Week: The Spartans lost a pair of matches at #1 USC, 11-5 and 12-5.

This Week: San Jose State have their home-opening matches this weekend with UCLA coming to the SRAC for Mountain Pacifici Sports Federation matches on Saturday and Sunday.
 
Spartan Fact: Six of San José State's first eight matches were against teams ranked in the top-10 at the time of the contest. The Spartans entered their matches at USC last weekend ranked 17th nationally.
