Gymnastics Continues Improvement For 2021 Season

USAFA, Colo.—The San José State women's gymnastics team continued to show improvement on Friday as the Spartans scored a 193.100 in a meet at the United State Air Force Academy. The team was competing in just their second meet of the season.

Tia Gin and Lauren Macpherson each won titles during the meet. Gin tied her career-best on floor with a 9.800 and added a 38.900 in the all-around to win both. Macpherson recorded the team's highest score of the night as she won the bars with a 9.850 and was second in the all-around at 38.325.

The Spartans started the night on bars with the highest team score of the night at 48.775. Macpherson led the team at 9.850, followed by Jada Mazury at 9.825, Emma Milne at 9.725, Alexa Solomon at 9.700, Jaudai Lopes at 9.675 and Gin at 9.650.

Moving to vault, Gin led the team with a 9.725, and the Spartans scored a 48.250. Macpherson added a 9.700, followed by Cameron Kelperis at 9.625, Madison Kirsch at 9.625, Lopes at 9.575 and Antonia Marquez at 9.200.

The floor team scored a 48.150, led again by Gin's 9.800. Kelperis added a 9.700, followed by Marquez at 9.650, Carli Orcutt at 9.600, Henley at 9.400 and Macpherson at 8.975.

The beam team finished the meet with a 47.925, an improvement from last week's meet at Stanford. Macpherson led the team with a season-best 9.800. The Spartans then got season highs from Mercedez Sanchez (9.775) and Gin (9.725), and Kelperis had a 9.525. Unfortunately, the team had to count a fall as Mazury had a 9.100, and Henley scored a 9.075.

"We continue to be very proud of the fight in this team," said Spartan head coach Joanne Bowers. "We started off great on bars, then went to vault and did well. We are still working on our endurance on floor and playing around with beam lineups. We showed some really good routines and the areas where we still need to improve. This team has great potential, and we are excited to have three more meets to keep improving."

The Spartans will compete twice next week. The team hosts Stanford Wednesday afternoon inside the Provident Credit Union Event Center at 3 p.m. The meet will be streamed on the program's twitter account (@SanJoseStateGYM), and live scores will be found at www.sjsustats.com. The team then travels to UCLA for a meet on Saturday, March 13, at 2 p.m.
