#16-Spartans Lose To #13-Indiana, 12-8

San Jose, Calif.---- For the second time this season, seven San Jose State University women's water polo players scored in one match. But unlike the 17-7 non-conference win at Santa Clara earlier in the season, seven was not the Spartans' lucky number in a 12-8 loss to #13-Indiana University in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match.

On Senior Day, #16-San Jose State (1-12, 09 MPSF) trailed the entire match after #13-Indiana (9-12, 1-8 MPSF) scored the first two goals on consecutive early possessions in the first quarter. The Spartans trailed twice by a goal in the opening quarter, but never got closer.

Tina Doherty of Indiana led all scorers with five goals on 10 shots. She scored three of her five goals in the first quarter as the Hoosiers led, 5-2, heading into the second quarter and had a two-goal lead the rest of the way.

Foul trouble didn't help the Spartans in any comeback effort. Starters Olga Descalzi Portell, Sierra Painter, and Emma Hank had two of an allowable three fouls before halftime. San Jose State found itself defending 10 6-on-5 power plays and goalkeeper Hannah Henry faced three 5-meter penalty shots. Henry stopped the last one as one of 11 saves in the match.

Descalzi Portell led San Jose State in scoring with two goals. Painter, Riley Agerbeek, Lili Urvari, Lior Ben David, Sophie Spivack, and Ryann Lucchesi each accounted for a goal in the Spartans' balanced attack. But, San Jose State only converted on 27.6 percent of its shots (8-for-29).

Indiana starting goalkeeper Mary Askew stopped 10 San Jose State shots and also scored a goal at the end of the second quarter firing a long ball from near the Indiana goal cage over Henry's head to send the Hoosiers into halftime with a 8-4 lead.

Painter, Hank, Urvari and Ty Supreme were the San Jose State seniors honored in pre-match ceremonies.

The two teams will conclude their weekend series on Sunday, April 18, in an 11:00 a.m. (PT) match at the San Jose State Student Recreation Aquatic Center. The match will be streamed live Facebook.com (https://www.facebook.com/sjsuwomenswaterpolo/live/)
