This Week in Spartan Athletics - April 19-25

This Week in San José State Athletics is here to catch you up on last week's action and see what's ahead for the Spartans!

Please note - In accordance with the SJSU Adapt Plan that restricts visitors to campus facilities, the San José State University Athletics Department will continue the policy of no fans at home sporting events for the remainder of the 2021 spring semester.
 
San José State is currently in "Phase 2: Modified Campus" which restricts visitors to campus facilities to essential staff or those who need to work on campus for instructional purposes.

Women's Tennis (14-0, 7-0)
This Week: The Spartans play the final two matches of the season this weekend in Las Vegas. The team plays host UNLV Friday morning and a neutral-site match with San Diego State at noon on Saturday. San José State sits atop the Mountain West standings with a perfect 7-0 record with UNLV and Fresno State tied for second at 6-2.

Last Week:  The Spartans went 2-0 over the weekend, defeating New Mexico and Air Force by the same 4-3 score.

Spartan Fact: Senior Savannah Sendar won at #6 singles in straight sets both days to clinch the matches for San José State. 

Spartan Fact #2: The Spartans are one of three Division I schools that are still undefeated on the season - #1 North Carolina 23-0 and #45 Florida International 9-0.

Women's Golf
This Week: The Spartans are playing at the 2021 Mountain West Championships at the Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, Calif. The teams will play 36 holes on Tuesday and 18 holes on Wednesday.  The Spartans begin play Tuesday morning at 7:45 a.m., with Colorado State and Wyoming.

Spartan Fact: The Spartans are looking for their first MW title since joining the conference for the 2013-14 season. The best finish was second at the 2014 championship, and third in 2015 and 2017.

Baseball (3-7, 1-2 MW)
This Week: The Spartans return to action for four contests this week, hosting Fresno State at Excite Ballpark on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. 

Last Week: San Jose State competed well in Omaha against Creighton but dropped both games against the Bluejays. The Spartans added the contests at the home of the College World Series after their previously-scheduled Mountain West series was canceled due to COVID-19 issues for UNLV. 

Spartan Fact: Junior Jonathan Clark tallied 11 strikeouts on Saturday at Creighton. The 11 strikeouts were the most for a Spartan against a power conference opponent since Apr. 16, 2015 (Turtle Kuhaulua, 11 vs. Washington State).

Men's Golf
This Week:  The team is preparing for the 2021 Mountain West Championships which will be held April 30-May 1 in Tucson, Ariz.

Last Week: Freshman Caleb Shetler saved the best for last firing a three-under 67 as San Jose State finished ninth at the nationally-televised 74th Western Intercollegiate presented by Topgolf men's golf tournament. Shelter finished tied for 15th at 214, a season best.

Softball (5-18, 1-8)
This Week: The Spartans were set to play at Cal on Wednesday, but the game was canceled due to COVID issues within the Golden Bears' program. SJSU has a bye week in conference play and will have the weekend off before returning to action next weekend against Utah State.

Last Week: San Jose State picked up their first win in Mountain West play with a 1-0 victory over San Diego State in game one of Saturday's doubleheader. The Aztecs won games two and three to capture the series.

Spartan Fact: Caroline Bowman and Jenessa Ullegue combined for just one run allowed in the Saturday doubleheader.

Track & Field
This Week: The Spartans are headed to Clovis to compete in the Fresno State Invitational on Sunday.

Last Week: It was another banner week for San Jose State as both the men's and women's teams took home individual titles at the Sacramento State Invitational. 

Spartan Fact: Senior Daryia Greene set three school records in Sacramento, achieving historic marks in the 200m (23.89 seconds) and 400m (54.53 seconds) along with the program's 4x100 team (45.79 seconds).

Beach Volleyball (2-3)
This Week: The team will host its first dual of the season this Wednesday as Sacramento State visits Spartan Beach. The Spartans then drive up the peninsula for four duals at Stanford. The team plays Grand Canyon and LMU on Saturday, and California and Stanford on Sunday. 

Last Week: The Spartans went 2-2 on the weekend with wins over Pacific and Sacramento State.

Spartan Fact: Allyson Alden and Mia Schafer are 3-0 on the season in the fourth position.

Women's Water Polo (2-12, 1-9 MPSF)
This Week: San José State travels up the peninsula to face Stanford on Saturday and Sunday.
 
Last Week: The Spartans split the final two home matches of the season, losing to Indiana on Saturday, 12-8, but rebounding on Sunday to win 9-8 in the final home match of the season.

Spartan Fact: Junior Riley Agerbeek scored a single-match career high four goals including the match winner with 1:50 remaining in the fourth quarter to lead #16-San Jose State to a 9-8 win over #13-Indiana on Sunday.

Men's Soccer (5-1-3, 5-1-2 WAC)
Last Week: San Jose State played to a 2-2 draw against Air Force in the WAC quarterfinals before falling to the Falcons in a penalty kick shootout. 

Spartan Fact: The Spartans are currently on a seven-match unbeaten streak which is the fifth-longest active streak in all of Division I.
