San Jose, Calif.—Trinity Johnson, a 2021 Development Program National Championship qualifier, will join the San José State University women's gymnastics program beginning with the 2021-22 school year, as announced by Spartan head coach Joanne Bowers.
Johnson, the daughter of Renetta and Terril Johnson of Riverside, Calif., is a Level 10 gymnast who trains at SCEGA in Southern California for coaches Kathy Strate, Gibran Campos, Craig Maurello, Danielle Albright, Ryan Covo and Roberta Teixeira. Johnson recently qualified for the upcoming national championship in May after finishing second in the all-around at the 2021 Region One Championships. She was fourth on the vault, bars and floor at the meet. Johnson was third in the all-around at the 2021 SoCal State Meet where she was second on bars and third on beam.
Why San José State
"I chose San José State because the coaches made me feel very comfortable and welcomed. When I visited SJSU, I fell in love with the campus. I talked with some of the gymnasts that I knew and that made it an easy decision that San José State was for me."
Coach Bowers on Trinity
"Trinity is a top-notch student, great gymnast and a highly respected young lady. She has the whole package that we are looking for in our recruiting efforts. Trinity comes to us from a very strong club gym, SCEGA, and coaches that we trust and respect. One of her current coaches, Dani Albright, was a stand-out gymnast here at SJSU and knows what it takes to be successful here. Trinity will add nice depth to every event, being a strong all-around gymnast. She is someone that combines her power with artistry and competes well. She fit in very well with the team and staff on her visit last year and has continued to impress us this past year with her good communication during a difficult year. We are so excited for how well she has been competing this year in a shortened season. Trinity is a great addition to our Spartan family!"
