This Week In Spartan Athletics - May 3-9

This Week in San José State Athletics is here to catch you up on last week's action and see what's ahead for the Spartans!

Please note - In accordance with the SJSU Adapt Plan that restricts visitors to campus facilities, the San José State University Athletics Department will continue the policy of no fans at home sporting events for the remainder of the 2021 spring semester. San José State is currently in "Phase 2: Modified Campus" which restricts visitors to campus facilities to essential staff or those who need to work on campus for instructional purposes.

Women's Tennis (15-1, 8-1)
2021 Mountain West Champions

This Week: The Spartans found out Monday afternoon that the team will travel up to Berkeley to face 16-seed California in the first round of the NCAA Championship this Friday, May 7.

Last Week:  The Spartans received many Mountain West awards. Irena Muradyanwas named the Co-MW Freshman of the Year, while head coach Chad Skorupkawas selected the MW Coach of the Year. Alba Pedrero Galindo and Muradyan were named All-MW in singles, while the doubles tandem of Savannah Sendar and Lara Marco Mas was named All-MW in doubles.

Spartan Fact: The Spartans are making their third appearance in the NCAA Championship, the last in 2017 when the team fell 4-0 at California.

Spartan Fact #2: Tamara Culibrk played in the NCAA Championship in 2017 in both singles and doubles.

Women's Golf
This Week: The Spartans are preparing for the NCAA Stanford Regional, May 10-12, at the Stanford Golf Course. The team enters as the 14 seed at the regional as play begins play next Monday off the first tee with Pepperdine and New Mexico State starting at 9:50 a.m.

Spartan Fact: The Spartans will make their 25th appearance at an NCAA regional.

Baseball (6-13, 2-5 MW)
This Week: The Spartans return to action for four contests this week, traveling to Berkeley to face California before a three-game series at San Diego State. 

Last Week: San Jose State won its first series of the season, taking two of three games at UC Davis. 

Spartan Fact: Junior Jonathan Clark was named the Mountain West Pitcher of the Week after striking out seven in SJSU's 4-3 victory over the Aggies.

Softball (8-18, 3-8)
This Week: The Spartans will hit the road for the final time this season as they gear up for a three-game series against New Mexico in Albuquerque.

Last Week: San Jose State played some of their best ball of the season as they swept Utah State in 7-6, 2-1 and 5-4 finals. Makayla Engelstad batted .400 over the series and had game-winning RBI in the second and third games. 

Spartan Fact: The Spartans have now swept Utah State in back-to-back series, and have won eight of their last nine against the Aggies.

Track & Field
This Week: The Spartan sprinters shined in the West Coast Relays, marking the program's final meet of the regular season. 

Last Week: No action. 

Spartan Fact: Senior Roman Johnson hit a conference-leading mark in the men's 100m while the Spartans finished two-three in the women's 400m in Clovis at the West Coast Relays.

May 13-15 - Mountain West Championships, Clovis, Calif. 

Beach Volleyball (4-7)
Last Week: Senior Kiley Kiley Lingenfelter finished her Spartan career on high note, winning her match, and the San José State beach volleyball team won 4-1 over San Francisco last Tuesday.
 
Lingenfelter paired with Calli Novak to win at #5, 21-18, 21-18, to finish her Spartan career with nine victories. Lingenfelter is a San José State Dean's List honoree and Arthur Ashe Jr., Sports Scholar.

Men's Golf
Last Week:  The Spartans finished the season with a seventh-place finish at the Mountain West Championship. The team shot a two-under 286 in the final round. Carl Corpus was the Spartans' top individual finisher at three-under 213, good to tie for 14th place. He shot a final round 69 that included an eagle and four birdies.

Women's Water Polo (2-16, 1-11 MPSF) 
Last Week: The Spartans season ended with a pair of losses at the MPSF Tournament. The team lost to second-seed UCLA 20-5, and sixth-seed Indiana, 7-6, to finish seventh at the tournament. Olga Descalzi Portell scored three goals in the loss to Indiana.
