Bats Stays Hot But Spartans Fall At California

Berkeley, Calif. – San José State's offense continued to shine but the effort proved not to be enough in an 18-10 loss on Tuesday afternoon at California.

The Spartans (6-14) totaled their 10 runs on six hits and exploded for their biggest inning of the season in the fourth, an eight-run frame that gave them a nine-run advantage against the Pac-12 opponent. The game marked the second of two scheduled contests with the Golden Bears (23-19) on the season, this one coming after SJSU earned a 10-7 win on the front end of the home-and-home

San José State has now totaled double-digit runs in back-to-back games, marking the first time the program has accomplished the feat since April of 2018 (won 15-7 and 10-7 at Fresno State).

First baseman Ruben Ibarra enjoyed another big day offensively, going 1-for-2 with three RBI, three runs scored and two walks. His fourth-inning home run to right field marked the junior's eighth homer of the season and his seventh in his last 10 games.

It was senior Jack Colette who drew first blood for the visitors on Tuesday, tallying his second home run on the 2021 campaign in the game's second inning to put his team up 1-0. Colette finished the day 2-of-4 at the dish while also working one walk.

San José State then pushed its lead out to 9-0 with that eight-run fourth inning. Ibarra reached on a hit-by-pitch to ignite the rally and was the first of 12 Spartan batters to come to the plate in the frame.

Ibarra, Dalton Bowling, Ryan Belluomini, Nik Trapani, Ruben Mercado and Reece Hernandez all tallied at least one RBI in the explosion.

Freshman Charles McAdoo got in on the fun ihe sixth inning, notching his third RBI in his last two appearances with a sacrifice fly to right field.
