LET'S GET IT STARTED!: San José State begins the 2021 volleyball season this weekend as the team plays two matches at the Oregon Invitational on Friday and Saturday followed by a non-conference match at Portland State on Sunday. The Spartans will travel to Eugene to face crosstown rival Santa Clara on Friday morning, before playing No. 14 Oregon Saturday afternoon. Both matches are part of the Oregon Invitational hosted by the Ducks.
Bump, Set, Spike
- While the campuses are just seven miles apart, San José State and Santa Clara are traveling approximately 560 miles to open the 2021 season against each other at the Oregon Invitational.

Since 1978, the Spartans and Broncos have faced each other in the opening match of the season three times. SJSU has a 2-1 record in those matches.

Sept. 1, 1999 A W, 3-0 (15-9, 15-7, 15-11)
Aug. 30, 2003 H L, 3-1 (28-30, 30-22, 30-24, 20-20) - San José State faces No. 14 Oregon in the team's second match of the season. SJSU has not opened the season against a top-15 team since the 2003 season when, ironically, the Spartans and Broncos faced each other in The Event Center. Santa Clara was ranked 14th to start the year.
- San José State head coach Trent Kersten is in his second season at the helm of the program. He led the Spartans to a 7-9 record in the spring of 2021, and SJSU was the only program to play all 16 matches of the Mountain West schedule.
