Spartans Fall Late To Tritons

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Senior Willy Miranda led San José State with three shots while both Max Allen and Beau Leroux totaled two but it was UC San Diego that came away with a 2-0 victory at Spartan Soccer Complex on Thursday evening.

The match marked the Spartans third contest in less than six days. The frenzied stretch will continue with one more fixture later this week before SJSU opens WAC play at Air Force on Sept. 25.

  • San José State's best chance of the first half came in the match's 22nd minute as Miranda fired a right-footed strike from 25 yards out. Zipping past multiple Triton defenders, the ball sailed just high to deny Miranda his fourth goal in five appearances this season.

  • Another pivotal moment came in the 58th minute as a shot from senior Finlay Wood struck the post to keep the match even at 0-0.

  • Sophomore Eric Waltz made five second half saves (and five saves total). The keeper now has 13 stops in three appearances on the season.

  • Each team ended the night with 10 shots while the Spartans held a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.

The Spartans will look to return to their winning ways when they face Pacific on Sunday in Stockton. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. against the Tigers.
