SAN JOSE, Calif. - For the second consecutive game, freshman goalkeeper Autum Monty made a career high in saves as she and the San Jose State women's soccer defense recorded their fifth shutout of the season in a 0-0 tie against San Diego State. The tie is the first for either team this season and gives the Spartans a very valuable point in the Mountain West standings as they continue to try to lock down one of the six spots in the MW Tournament Championship.
It was a bittersweet day for the San Jose State program as four student-athletes played their final game at the Spartan Soccer Complex in the blue and gold. Seniors Karlee Pottorff, Natalia Nava, Sabrina Nava, Lauola Amanoni, along with assistants Caitlin McManus and Hannah Hall were all honored for senior day in an on-field ceremony prior to kickoff.
- Monty was credited with a season-best eight saves in the shutout effort. One of her biggest came in the waning moments of the second overtime period as she made a stop to preserve the shutout.
- The defense was up to the task once again against a very talented Aztec scoring attack. The back line allowed 21 shots, but just eight on goal, and turned away eight San Diego State corner kick opportunities.
- The 0-0 tie is the Spartans' first result against the Aztecs since Oct. 6, 2018 (also a scoreless tie), breaking a four-game losing skid in the series.
- San Jose State's best opportunity to get on the scoreboard came in the 37th minute as Pottorff fired off a shot destined for the left-hand corner of the net, but Aztec keeper Cameron Illingworth made a diving save to knock the shot away.
- Pottorff finished with two shots, both on goal, while Evan House and Cynthia Flores each got off three shots to lead the team.
- The Aztecs finished with a 21-15 advantage in shots and 8-1 advantage in corner kicks.
San Jose State (7-8-1, 4-3-1) have three more regular-season contests ahead of them - all on the road. The Spartans will take on UNLV and Nevada next weekend before putting a bow on the regular season with a trip to Fresno to take on Fresno State on Thursday, Oct. 28.
