Spartans Extend Unbeaten Streak To Seven With Shutout Win

SAN ANTONIO - Upperclassmen Rudi Castro and Kasper Poulsgaard combined for a wild goal off a late free kick while sophomore keeper Eric Waltz secured his second road shutout of the season to lead San José State to a 1-0 win at Incarnate Word on Sunday.

The Spartans (8-5-2, 6-1-1 WAC) extended their unbeaten streak to seven matches with the victory, marking the program's best since its stretch of eight straight results in 2009.

  • SJSU earned a free kick from 31 yards out in the 88th minute and took full advantage to score the match-winner. Castro sent the ball into the box and a streaking Poulsgaard was able to redirect it just past the line to put the visitors ahead 1-0.

  • Waltz earned his third result of the season and second road shutout in the winning effort. He has now notched 160 consecutive minutes of scoreless soccer in goal.

  • In a season filled with strong performances, the San José State back line notched one of its best on Sunday. The Spartan defense allowed just one shot and one corner kick in 90 minutes against the Cardinals. That is the lowest shot output for a Division I opponent of SJSU's in 20 years (held MPSF champion New Mexico to 0 shots on Oct. 15, 2001).

  • San José State tallied 14 shots on the day. It ended the match with a total of six attempts on goal.

  • Castro led all performers with five shots for the match.

  • Sunday's victory marks SJSU's fifth straight win against Incarnate Word. The program is a perfect 4-0 all-time against the Cardinals in San Antonio.

  • The Spartans still have not lost in the state of Texas in the last seven years, improving to 8-1-3 in the Lone Star State since 2015 with the victory.

San José State will look to extend its unbeaten streak to eight matches when it kicks off its final homestand of the season on Friday against Chicago State. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. at Spartan Soccer Complex.
