CHENEY, Wash.. - San José State women's basketball is in search of its first win of the young season on Thursday evening when the Spartans clash with Eastern Washington. Tip off is set for 6:00 p.m. and fans can catch all the action on ESPN+. 


Fresh Faces
The Spartans debuted three freshmen in Tuesday night's season opener: Sidney Richards, Sammy Shields and Jadyn Watson. San José State also introduced five transfers to the lineup: A'Tyanna Gaulden (Georgia Southern), Deja Ross (Xavier), Stephanie Torres (Eastern Florida), Ellie Boni (Colorado State) and Ella Ogier (Omaha).

Gaulden led the Spartans in scoring at Washington State. Gaulden scored 14 points in the 86-56 loss at Beasley Coliseum.

 
Scouting Report: The Eagles
Eastern Washington is led by first-year head coach Joddie Gleason, who was hired as the eighth head women's basketball coach in program history on May 21, 2021. The 2021-22 edition of Eagle women's basketball features eight returners and eight newcomers, five of which are true freshmen and three transferred in.

Eastern Washington was picked to finish 11th in the Big Sky by the coaches preseason polls after finishing 6-17 overall and 5-12 in Big Sky Conference play a year ago.
 
The Spartans lead Eastern Washington all-time, 1-0. The two teams last met on November 8, 2019. San José State got the 84-66 win, scoring 30 fast-break points and 15 off of turnovers. The Spartans shot 46.67 percent with 14 made three pointers in the win.
 
At the Helm
The Spartans are led by head coach Jamie Craighead in her ninth season at the helm. Under Craighead's guidance, San José State reached the semifinals of the 2015 and 2020 Mountain West Tournaments. The 2019-20 Spartans finished in a tie for third place in the Mountain West standings, the best-ever finish for a team picked last in the conference's preseason poll. In addition, the team's 19 wins on the 2019-20 campaign were the program's most since the 1979-80 team won 22 games.
