The ninth-ranked San José State women's gymnastics team competes Saturday night in a tri-meet hosted by Oregon State with Washington. The Spartans are coming off their best season-opening meet in school history where the team scored a 195.950 at Denver on Sunday.

The Spartans face Oregon State for the first time since a 2015 quad meet in Corvallis. San José State and Washington competed in 2020 at a quad meet in Denver which turned out to be the final competition of the COVID-shortened season.

Leaps & Flips

  • The Spartans are currently tied for ninth nationally after the first week of competition. This is the highest ranking for the program in school history. San José State is tied with Iowa at 195.950, and is just ahead of Alabama at 195.875.
  • Jada Mazury was named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Gymnast of the Week after her performances at Denver. She won the bars with a career-best 9.925, tying four other Spartans for the second-best bars score in school history.
  • Spartan head coach Joanne Bowers coached for 10 years at the University of Washington. This is the second time in her Spartan coaching career that she will coach SJSU against the Huskies.
  • The Spartans scored a 49.000 in the third and fourth rotations at Denver. SJSU scored a 49.000 on floor in the third rotation, followed by the exact same number on beam in the final rotation. The beam score ties for the eight-best beam score in school history. Lauren Macpherson won the event with a 9.900.
  • The Spartans opening meet of 2022 featured three all-around performers for the team. Jada Mazury and Jaudai Lopes performed all four events for the first time in their respective Spartan careers, while Lauren Macpherson continued where she left off in 2021 when she was the team's only all-around performer. At Denver, Mazury scored a 39.350, tying for the seventh-best all-around score at SJSU. Macpherson added a career-best 39.250. Lopes recorded her first 39+ score with a 39.175.

The Spartans will host three meets this season beginning with Sacramento State on Sunday, January 30, at 2 p.m., followed by Air Force on Friday, February 11, at 7 p.m., and UC Davis on Sunday, February 27, at 2 p.m. All meets will be held inside the Provident Credit Union Event Center.
