Santa Barbara, Calif. ----- San Jose State University's balanced scoring for the second consecutive match highlighted the Spartans' second day in the UCSB Winter Invite women's water polo tournament.
Ten San Jose State players scored in the Spartans' 18-9 victory over No.21 Cal Baptist to open its doubleheader action.
San Jose State (2-1), No.16-ranked in the preseason Collegiate Water Polo Association national coaches poll, lost its first match of the season to No.9 UC San Diego (1-1), 9-7, to wrap up its first 2022 doubleheader.
HIGHLIGHTS vs. No. 21 CAL BAPTIST
• San Jose State broke a 1-1 first quarter tie against the Lancers and led the rest of the way.
• Olga Descalzi and freshmen Lucy Miszewski and Lauren Woolley each scored a team-high three goals for the Spartans in the Cal Baptist victory.
• Goalkeeper Elaina Davey stopped a personal single-match best 10 shots in the win.
• The Spartans matched their win total in the abbreviated 2021 season with their win over Cal Baptist.
HIGHLIGHTS vs. No. 9 UC SAN DIEGO
• San Jose State took a 7-6 lead into the fourth quarter, but was held scoreless in a quarter for the first time this season.
• Cila David was the Spartans' leading scorer with three goals, two of them in the third quarter. Olga Descalzi, Riley Agerbeek, Ryann Lucchesi and Lior Ben David each scored once.
• San Jose State scored its first goal on a power-play, but did not take advantage of any of its four remaining opportunities finishing 1-for-5 for the match. UC San Diego was 4-of-10.
• In each of its first three matches, all against top-25 ranked opponents, the opponent scored fewer than 10 goals against the Spartans. Last year, San Jose State gave up 10 or more goals 14 out of 16 contests.
San Jose State concludes opening weekend on Sunday, January 23 in the UCSB Winter Invite taking on unranked Brown at 9:15 a.m. and unranked Iona at 1:30 p.m.
