No.16-Spartans Finish 4-1 At UCSB Winter Invite With DH Sweep

COACH BETH HARBERTS | Brown win match statistics | Iona win match statistics

Santa Barbara, Calif.----- San Jose State University is off to its best start in women's water polo in six years after completing a doubleheader sweep of Brown, 13-6, and Iona, 17-7, on the third and final day of the UC Santa Barbara Winter Invite.

The No.16-Spartans (4-1) relied on a varied scoring attack and solid defense and goalkeeping by Elaina Davey to match the program's 4-1 start to the 2016 season. In its five weekend non-conference matches, five Spartans had match-high scoring honors. Only senior Olga Descalzi and freshman Cila David led or shared team-high scoring honors in more than one contest. San Jose State did not allow any of its five opponents to reach the 10-goal mark in a match.

BROWN HIGHLIGHTS

• The Spartans scored first and never trailed defeating Brown, 13-7. San Jose State led, 5-1 after the first quarter and 10-4 at halftime. Olga Descalzi scored her team-high three goals in the first half as eight Spartans scored. Jaime Pitcher, Ryann Lucchesi and Riley Agerbeek each scored twice for San Jose State.

• San Jose State converted 56.5 percent of its shots.

• Elaina Davey was credited with a personal single-match best 15 saves.

IONA HIGHLIGHTS

• San Jose State followed the same formula of scoring first, converting shots, taking a big first-quarter lead, and playing sound defense for four quarters in its 17-7 win over Iona. The Spartans led 4-0 at the end of the first quarter and 7-3 at halftime.

• San Jose State made a season-best 63.8 percent of its shots against Iona.

• Riley Agerbeek finished with seven goals on the day including a personal best five goals against the Gaels.  Clarissa Wandinger had her first two-goal scoring match of the season and drew three Iona exclusions as part of the Spartans' defensive effort.

• Goalkeeper Elaina Davey stopped 11 Iona shots, her third double-digit save effort in the last two days.
