BERKELEY, Calif.----- San Jose State University wrapped up first-day action at the Cal Cup women's water polo tournament with a 10-9 comeback win over No. 8-Fresno State. The No.12-ranked Spartans (5-2) lost their first match of the day to UC Davis, 14-13, in overtime.
SHOTS ON GOAL
• In three days of action in 2022, San Jose State exceeded its win total of the 2021 season when the team finished ranked 16th nationally and already matched its five wins in 2020.
• The Spartans' win over Fresno State was their first win over a top-10 ranked team since defeating No. 6 California, 9-8, in Berkeley, in 2020.
• In the win over Fresno State, San Jose State overcame a 4-1 first-quarter deficit, took its first lead of the match at 6-5 in the third quarter, and led the remainder of the match. Freshman Lucy Miszewski led the Spartans in scoring with four goals, three of them to spark the second-quarter rally and tie the match at 5-5 going into halftime.
• Olga Descalzi scored three goals in each San Jose State match of the day. Her third goal with 3:47 to go in the fourth quarter of the Fresno State win gave the Spartans a 10-8 lead before the Bulldogs scored the final goal of the match 24 seconds later.
• Elaina Davey was credited with eight saves including one on a 5-meter penalty shot in the Fresno State win. She was credited with 11 saves in the 14-13 overtime loss to No. 13 UC Davis.
• The Spartans had two-four goal leads in the first half, led by three in the third quarter, and were ahead by two in the fourth quarter before UC Davis tied the match at 12-12 at the 0:55 mark of the fourth quarter.
• Riley Agerbeek with three goals and Maiken Pardon and Ryann Lucchesi with two apiece joined Descalzi as multiple-goal scorers vs. UC Davis.
